Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat from California, recently joined a growing number of Democratic lawmakers in urging President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race. In a letter to President Biden, Lofgren expressed her respect for his work and legacy while emphasizing her concerns about the potential consequences of his candidacy.
Lofgren stated, 'I want to be clear that should you formally become the Democratic nominee for President, I will do everything I can to promote your candidacy and to work for your success.' However, she also expressed doubts about the likelihood of a positive outcome and warned of potential negative impacts on crucial House and Senate races down the ballot.
Referring to data indicating a probable loss in the presidential race, Lofgren highlighted the trajectory of Biden's candidacy and its potential implications. She urged President Biden to step aside from the Democratic nomination to allow another candidate to compete against and defeat Donald Trump in the November election.
As the chairwoman of the California Democratic congressional delegation and the ranking member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, Lofgren's call for Biden to withdraw marks her as the 30th Democratic lawmaker to make such a request.
