During a recent hearing of the House Oversight Committee, Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin emphasized the importance of implementing a ban on assault weapons. This call for action came in the midst of the resignation of former US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.
Raskin, who serves as the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, joined forces with Committee chair James Comer in urging Cheatle to step down following the events of the hearing held on Monday.
Raskin stated, 'Yesterday’s Oversight Committee hearing highlighted two critical priorities in light of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and the subsequent mass shooting. The first priority was the immediate resignation of Director Cheatle to allow new leadership within the Secret Service to promptly address the crisis, restore the confidence of Congress and the American people, and ensure the security of protectees. We have successfully achieved this objective today.'
Raskin further emphasized the pressing need to ban assault weapons in order to safeguard the public from incidents like the recent mass shooting in Butler. The call for stricter gun control measures aims to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
