Rep. Nancy Pelosi underwent a “successful” hip replacement surgery following an injury sustained during an official engagement in Luxembourg. The 84-year-old California congresswoman was admitted to a hospital in Luxembourg after falling on the stairs. Pelosi's office has not disclosed the specifics of how the injury occurred.
According to a spokesperson, Pelosi is now “well on the mend” and is receiving excellent care from doctors and medical professionals. She was medevaced from Luxembourg to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, a major military hospital known for treating US troops injured in combat.
The injury occurred while Pelosi was traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Despite the setback, Pelosi expressed regret for being unable to complete the delegation's engagements but looks forward to returning home to the US soon.
Notably, this incident comes shortly after Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell also suffered a fall at the US Capitol, resulting in a minor cut to his face and a sprained wrist. McConnell, 82, has since been cleared to resume his schedule.
