Rep. Mills under investigation for alleged assault; police response in question

The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating an alleged assault involving Florida Rep. Cory Mills, as well as probing its own response to the incident, the department confirmed Friday.

Officers were called to an apartment near The Wharf in Southwest Washington around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday on a report of an assault, according to police. But little additional information was provided.

“This is an active criminal investigation and there is no further information on the case to provide at this time,” Tom Lynch, supervisory public affairs specialist with MPD, said in an emailed statement.

A spokesperson for Mills could not immediately be reached. In a texted reply to a request for comment, the alleged victim said she had contacted law enforcement “to address a personal matter” but denied a “physical altercation” and said the situation is being misrepresented in the media.

Metropolitan Police and Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed the incident was under internal review. NBC4 Washington reported it had viewed multiple police reports relating to the alleged assault, each “showing varying levels of detail.”

“I don’t know anything about a report being changed,” Bowser said when asked about the police response at a press conference Friday. “I can confirm that there is an internal investigation on making sure that all of our members did what they were supposed to do according to MPD policy.”

A spokesperson for MPD did not respond when asked about the claim of multiple police reports.

“Once MPD leadership became aware of this matter there was an immediate review of our initial response to ensure all procedures were followed. MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is currently investigating this matter,” Lynch said in his emailed statement.

The House was not in session this week, but many Republicans remained in town for the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. Mills had been set to speak at the conference but as of Friday was no longer listed on the agenda.

A spokesperson for the conference said Mills had “an emergency” and they were working with him to find a different time to speak. “He is a great member and a strong ally,” the person said via email.

Mills has represented Florida’s 7th District since 2023. He’s a former defense contractor and is an Army veteran. In December, the House Ethics Committee announced it would extend a matter involving Mills that was referred by the Office of Congressional Ethics. The details of that referral have not been released.
