A senior House Republican from California has extended an invitation to Vice President Kamala Harris to visit the U.S.-Mexico border and witness the ongoing crisis firsthand. Rep. Darrell Issa emphasized that he has been inviting Harris to the border annually for the past four years, both before and after she was tasked with addressing the root causes of migration from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.
Issa expressed his concerns about the migration issue, highlighting that it is not limited to the three aforementioned countries but also includes immigrants from various parts of the world such as Romania, Russia, and Asia. Despite his invitations, Issa does not anticipate Harris accepting the offer, citing past experiences where she did not engage with him during his tenure as a Trump administration appointee.
The latest data indicates a decrease in border encounters in June, with just under 84,000 migrants encountered between points of entry. However, Republicans argue that the numbers remain too high and continue to hold Biden and Harris accountable for crimes committed by illegal immigrants in the country.
Issa, who represents a district along the Mexican border, highlighted concerns raised by law enforcement regarding border-related crimes. He underscored the importance of enforcing laws, punishing criminals, and securing the border as core principles of the Republican Party.
Meanwhile, Sen. J.D. Vance, a Republican from Ohio and former President Trump's running mate, is scheduled to tour a section of the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona. Issa noted that while Republicans may not always see eye to eye, they share common ground in advocating for smaller government, lower taxes, law enforcement, and border security.
