Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., has emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility in the selection of the next House speaker, introducing a new element of uncertainty regarding Mike Johnson's ability to secure the necessary 218 Republican majority votes to retain the position.
Burchett stated that he is not firmly committed to supporting Speaker Johnson and mentioned that he is awaiting further discussions with the Louisiana Republican before making a decision.
Among the 34 Republicans who opposed the government spending bill that narrowly passed the House recently to prevent a partial government shutdown, Burchett stood out. The bill faced resistance from Burchett and other fiscal conservatives, such as Rep. Chip Roy, R-Tex., who criticized lawmakers for deviating from the Republican Party's fundamental principle of fiscal responsibility.
When asked about the conditions under which he would consider voting to reelect Johnson, Burchett highlighted the necessity for substantial discussions on fiscal responsibility.
Burchett also shared his belief that the initial speaker vote within the House Republican caucus is expected to be extremely close.
