During a recent hearing, Rep. Becca Balint from Vermont questioned Robert Hur, Special Counsel, regarding the investigation into mishandling of classified documents. Balint commended Hur for his dedication and highlighted the significance of their immigrant backgrounds in holding such positions.
Hur confirmed that after a thorough investigation involving 150 witness interviews and review of over 7 million documents, no criminal charges were warranted. He emphasized the impartiality and independence of the investigation, stating that there was no influence from the Department of Justice (DOJ) leadership or the Attorney General.
When asked about resources, Hur confirmed having all necessary tools to conduct interviews and complete the report. He clarified that the decision not to charge President Biden was based on the lack of evidence beyond a reasonable doubt of willful mishandling of classified materials.
Hur mentioned that President Biden cooperated with the investigation, including sitting for interviews and allowing FBI searches of his properties. The report highlighted multiple innocent explanations for the presence of classified documents where they were found.
Notably, Hur's report pointed out that historically, the DOJ has not prosecuted former presidents or vice presidents for mishandling classified documents from their administrations, except for former President Trump. The recommendation of no charges against President Biden would stand even if he were not in office.
Balint concluded by reiterating the report's findings and emphasizing that there was no evidence of obstruction of justice. She thanked Hur for his testimony and yielded back.
