Fred R. Krug, a renowned producer, director, and cinematographer known for his work on nature-focused TV programs such as Animal World, Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, and The Magical World of Disney, has passed away at the age of 94. Krug, a Swiss-born pioneer in wildlife TV documentaries and travel shows, died on June 4 of natural causes at his residence in Solvang, California.

Throughout his illustrious career, Krug collaborated with a myriad of notable personalities including Gypsy Rose Lee, Louis Armstrong, and Tippi Hedren. His work took him to various exotic locations around the world, from the jungles of South America to the mountains of Italy.

Born on August 30, 1929, in Bern, Switzerland, Krug's passion for filmmaking began at a young age when he purchased his first movie camera at 10. He later ventured into photography and journalism, covering the entertainment scene in Europe and even translating Bram Stoker's Dracula into German.

After relocating to Los Angeles, Krug's career flourished, thanks in part to a meeting with Peter Ballbusch, a fellow Swiss native working at MGM. Following his service in the U.S. Army, Krug returned to Hollywood, where he worked on a variety of TV projects, including Animal World, Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, and The Magical World of Disney.

His contributions to television extended beyond wildlife documentaries, as he also worked on shows like The American West, The World of Reptiles, and CHiPs. Krug's dedication to his craft earned him recognition from industry giants like Roy Disney, leading to his endorsement for membership in the Directors Guild of America.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Krug was an active member of Rotary Clubs in Hollywood and Santa Ynez, showcasing his commitment to community service. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rosemary, his daughter Vivian Krug-Cotton, and his son-in-law Samuel.
