Renowned singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean named as chieftain for Perth Highland Games

A “tremendous buzz” has been created and the countdown is very much on to Perth Highland Games after renowned singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean was announced as chieftain for 2023.

The upcoming event, which is pencilled in the diary for Sunday, August 13 at the South Inch, is one of the highlights of the local social calendar.

A bumper line-up of events is set to entertain visitors from near and far, including the much-loved pipe band spectacle, highland dancing competitions and heavyweight competitions.

There will be track events - including the 90m Scottish sprint and 1000m Scottish cycle - as well as the British Championship 22lb hammer throw competition.

And prepare to be amazed by the scenes created by the Scottish Knight League who will be battling it out in suits of armour.

As always, an array of food and drink stalls will be available to keep hungry and thirsty punters energised at this family-friendly event.

The unveiling of Butterstone-based MacLean as this year’s chieftain has added another string to the bow of the always-popular Perth Highland Games.

Organisers note: “The upcoming Perth Highland Games are set to be a highlight of the summer, and the announcement of Dougie MacLean OBE as this year’s chieftain has generated a tremendous buzz among attendees and participants.

“With Dougie MacLean at the helm, this year’s games are poised to be a memorable experience for all.”

MacLean is a beloved figure of the Scottish music industry and has crafted some of the country’s most iconic tunes - including ‘Caledonia’.

The Perth Highland Games website, introducing their chieftain, goes on to note: “With his enchanting voice and lyrical talent, he has become a symbol of Scottish identity, inspiring countless individuals near and far.

“In addition to his musical contributions, MacLean has been honoured with the esteemed title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music and charity.

“His dedication to philanthropy is evident through his involvement in various charitable initiatives, making him a respected figure in both the artistic and humanitarian spheres.

“As the chieftain of this year’s Perth Highland Games, Dougie MacLean brings a deep-rooted passion for Scottish heritage, which perfectly aligns with the event’s values.
