A secondary school in Linwood has received a positive inspection report.
St Benedict’s High School was visited by a team of Education Scotland inspectors in February.
During their visit, the inspectors spoke with parents/carers and young people and worked closely with the headteacher and staff members. Publishing its findings, the watchdog evaluated the high school as being “good” across four “quality indicators”.
These were leadership of change; learning, teaching, and assessment; ensuring wellbeing equality, and inclusion; and raising attainment and achievement.
In its report, Education Scotland found several strengths in the school’s work.
These were the head teacher having a commitment to developing a culture of increased expectations and high aspirations for youngsters and senior leaders and staff in the centre ensuring the school’s values are underpinned in the work of the school.
They also said that young people are confident, articulate, responsible citizens and they are eager to support the wellbeing of others and are positive role models within their community.
Relationships between staff and pupils were also described as nurturing, mutually respectful, and they support a well-developed climate for learning.
Staff in the flexible learning resource are skilled in providing pupils with a calm and engaging environment for learning.
However, while the secondary education centre received several strengths, the watchdog also recommended areas for improvement, which were discussed with the head teacher and a representative from Renfrewshire Council.
These were that staff should continue to develop approaches used to identify, measure and evaluate the impact of school improvements on outcomes for youngsters and teachers should continue to develop high-quality learning, teaching, and assessments to challenge and meet the need of all learners.
They were also recommended to increase opportunities for young people to lead aspects and have increasing ownership of their learning.
Meanwhile, senior school leaders should continue to ensure that all programmes and courses meet the needs of all pupils in their senior phase and staff in the flexible learning resource should continue to build positive relationships developed with youngsters and their parents.
Education Scotland said: “We are confident the school has the capacity to continue to improve and so we will make no more visits in connection with this inspection. Renfrewshire Council will inform parents/carers about the school’s progress.”
St Benedict’s head teacher Alan Taylor added: “I am delighted with the positive comments expressed throughout this report, reflecting our commitment to delivering a high-quality educational experience for all our young people.”
