Renfrewshire carnival makes return as crowds will celebrate 100 years of Disney

Families are being invited to celebrate all things Disney as the Houston Killellan Kirk Carnival returns to the social calendar.

The much-loved fun day is back after a four-year break – and promises to be as good as ever.

Locals are being encouraged to dust off their Mickey Mouse ears, Let It Go and get ready for an Incredibles time as the 2023 carnival theme aims to celebrate 100 years of Disney.

The event kicks off at midday on Saturday with a fancy dress competition at the Kirk followed by a carnival parade to the Carrick Centre which will be led by 1st Houston Boys’ Brigade Pipe Band.

Houston and Killellan Kirk Minister, Rev Gary Noonan, will officially open the carnival at 1pm, outside the Carrick Centre in Main Street.

Wristbands will allow people unlimited use of all the sideshows and activities including a rodeo bull; wipe-out and bungee run for adults; pirate run; giant slide and ball pond for kids. There’s also a kids zone and tea room with home-baking.

Rev Noonan told the Paisley Daily Express: “For me, the best thing about the carnival is the way the whole community turns out to have a great time.

"Seeing young and old come together at the same event, sharing fun, laughter and smiles, reminds us what life is all about and how important community is.

“Every single penny of the money we raise at carnival goes to support events and activities that are open to the whole community.

Most of us face challenging times at some point in our lives and it is much easier if we can do so with support.

“Meeting up for a cuppa and a chat, learning new skills, enjoying a walk or getting together for a sing-song – these simple activities can make all the difference – and these are the things that our carnival helps us to fund.

“It is great to have our Kirk Carnival back on again and we can’t wait to welcome everyone on Saturday.”

A lucky prize draw on the day will offer people the chance of winning a selection of prizes, including a £100 voucher for the River Inn, a £70 voucher for Amaretto and a £40 voucher for Houston Hair Salon.

The face painting, tombolas, plant stall and food and drink stalls are all cash only.
