Renfrew secondary holds Scientist Superstar awards

Several talented pupils at a Renfrew high school have won a Science Superstar Award that recognises pupils and their application in science.

Trinity High School created the internal award to help promote STEM within the school and to encourage youngsters to pursue a career in a science-based field.

Teacher Paul Marshall said: “Our Science Superstar award happens throughout the year, at different times of the year and it recognises pupils and their application and achievements in science. Our Science Superstar award has been created to promote STEM in the school.

“We try and promote links to the young work force and teach transferable skills across all the subjects we have that make relevant links into the world of work. We planned a lot of activities during British Science Week as well within the departments – which were supported by senior students who were acting as mentors.”

STEM, at its core, educates students in four specific areas: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

These four fields share an emphasis on innovation, problem-solving and critical thinking and together they make a fast-growing industry. The four subject areas share fertile ground from which future industry leaders will be nurtured and encouraged to grow.

Trinity High School is also introducing a new award in August to really inspire change not only in the school, but also within the local community too.

Marshall explained: “We have a new Steps-to-Success, a new school wide policy that will be launched in August and it is about recognising achievements across the school and the different ways we would do that is through wall displays, school tannoys, our Twitter account and our Values Badge as well.

“So, whenever a student has demonstrated a core value, whether that be in the school or in the community, we celebrate that in a variety of ways.”
