Renfrew boss Jimmy Quigley hopes his side have finally put their cup win behind them as they switch their attention fully to adding more silverware to their trophy cabinet this season.
The New Western Park club had struggled on the park since their historic Demolition Cup triumph at the end of January.
A painful 4-0 home defeat to Maryhill and a 2-2 draw with Forth Wanderers saw their title rivals close the gap at the top of the WoSFL Division Two table.
Thankfully, Renfrew finally responded this weekend, thumping an incredible six unanswered goals past Glasgow University to stay two points clear at the top of the league.
Former Celtic youth striker Ciaran Diver bagged an impressive four goals, with Dominic Lavelle and Dom Innes grabbing the other two between them.
Quigley hopes the distraction of their memorable cup final is finally in the rear view mirror as the club now target securing a sensational double this season.
He told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “We’ve been in a bit of a rut lately and badly needed a win to get us back on track.
“The cup final became a bit of a distraction and our performances in the games leading up to it and directly after it simply weren’t good enough.
“We were brilliant against Glasgow Uni and scored some very good goals. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the game filmed, so no one can see them back!
“Lavelle scored a beauty from about 25 yards and a couple of Diver’s goals were superb as well. It’s a wee confidence boost for Ciaran who has been working very hard over the last few weeks, but just hasn’t been at his lethal best.
“We’d given ourselves a great platform in the league, a great opportunity and then we’ve taken it away from ourselves with our recent performances.
“We know there’s no more room for error now and hopefully we can draw a line under the cup and move on. Subconsciously I think it affected us, but now everything is focused on the league.”
Renfrew know they have the perfect opportunity to keep top spot in the division this weekend when they travel to face nearest challengers Ashfield.
A win for the Renfrewshire side would restore the gap between the two teams currently at the top of the league to five points, with Quigley admitting this weekend’s result could have a huge say in the title race as a whole.
Quigley said: “The Ashfield game is massive in terms of our season.
“I watched them play St Anthony’s on the weekend and they were very strong. They’re the best team we’ve faced in this division this season and we know it’s going to be tough. We drew 1-1 at home and there wasn’t much between us that day.
“We’re hoping for a similar performance and result to the Glasgow game, of course.
“We’ll have Scott Morton back available and I’m hoping to add another one or two players to the squad over the next week to freshen things up a bit.
“We’ve got 13 games left in the league and we need to keep pushing on to try and stay at the top of the division.”
