Renfrew dad fined after kicking off about ripped old T-shirt

A Renfrew dad has been fined after he kicked off over an old ripped T-shirt.

Desmond Meechan, 62, lost the plot at his wife and son back in March 2020 over a ripped top and the front door being open “letting all the heat out.”

Meechan appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty ahead of his trial that he did shout, swear and act in an aggressive manner towards his partner Fiona Meechan and his son, Martyn Meechan on March 4, 2020 at a property in Abbotsford Crescent, Paisley.

Procurator fiscal depute Maureen McGovern told the court the incident included Meechan’s estranged wife and adult son.

Ms McGovern explained: “Around 12.20pm, the accused kicked off as an old T-shirt had been ripped.

“He became irate at his son stating ‘Did you rip this f*****g T-shirt? You better get out this f*****g house.’

“The accused then became irate at his wife over an exercise machine.

“Shortly after, the accused’s son opened the front door to let the dog out to the garden. Meechan then shouted ‘Close the f*****g door, you’re letting all the heat out of here.’

“Things escalated with the accused becoming increasingly aggressive to his wife and son causing fear and alarm. Fiona Meechan, contacted the police and the accused left the house knowing this.

“The accused stayed away overnight and the next morning, police attended and arrested him where he was cautioned and charged and made no reply.”

Ms McGovern explained that Meechan’s ex-wife, Fiona and son, Martyn, were of the view that “they don’t want him back at the house, as that seems to be when things kick off.”

Defence agent Ms Barber told the court: “In the heat of the moment, he acted stupidly and in this manner.”

Sheriff Simon Fraser imposed a fine of £245 and ordered Meechan, of Arran Road in Renfrew to pay this at £30 per month.

Sheriff Fraser also imposed a non-harassment order for one year preventing Meechan from entering Fiona Meechan’s property without her express permission.
