Renfrew coach urges players to stay focused as club chase historic league and cup double

Ryan Borris believes Renfrew are on the “cusp of something special” as the club chase an historic league and cup double this season.

But the coach is urging the New Western Park club’s players to stay focused after almost dropping points to lowly Glasgow United.

Having already lifted the Demolition Cup, ‘Frew are now aiming to bag themselves the WoSFL Second Division title.

Jimmy Quigley’s men opened up a five-point gap at the top of the table thanks to an eventful win against Glasgow United, with Scott Morton, Jamie Benton and a Ciaran Diver brace seeing them over the line on Saturday afternoon.

With a tough trip this weekend to Holm Park to face Yoker, Borris believes his side must keep their eye on the prize as they look to seal a league title that would crown one of their most successful-ever campaigns.

Borris told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “We’re coming to the business end of the season now and putting three points on the board is all that matters.

“As players and staff it would be great for the scoreline to not have been quite so tight, but with 10 games left now it’s just a case of winning as many as we can.

“We don’t want to be giving other teams any hope of catching us by dropping points. We can keep the pressure on the chasing pack by building this gap and our focus is solely on ourselves.

“There’s no doubt that we’re on the cusp of something special. A league and cup double doesn’t come around very often and, with a chance of making it into the senior Scottish Cup still to come as well, this could turn into one of the club’s best-ever seasons.

“There’s a sense within the group and the club that something big is coming but we need to stick to what has got us to this point.

“We need to stick to the hunger and desire and we can’t relax yet because there’s still a long way to go in the league. We need to keep pushing and not drop our levels.”

While every result from now until the end of the season could be crucial, Borris feels Renfrew’s players have already proved they have nerves of steel after winning the Demolition Cup on penalties.

He added: “Nerves will undoubtedly come into play because they always do when you’re trying to win a league or a cup.

“But our boys have delivered in big moments already this season.

“They’ve shown they can perform under pressure and I’m confident they can do so again in the weeks ahead.”
