Renfrew boss fully focused on promotion after winning crucial Ashfield clash

Jimmy Quigley insists his sole focus is on getting Renfrew “back where they belong” before contemplating a silverware double this season.

The New Western Park club have already wrapped up a Demoliton Cup success while remaining in top spot in the WoSFL Second Division for the majority of the campaign.

Renfrew’s form did dip both before and after their historic cup success, allowing their nearest challengers to close the gap at the top of the table.

One of their title rivals was Ashfield, putting added pressure on Saturday’s trip to Glasgow. And Fraser Sheridan opened the scoring early for the hosts, with an own goal pulling Frew level before half-time.

Ashfield knew a win would have seen them leapfrog the visitors in the table and looked on course to manage just that when Jonny Black put them back in front.

Renfrew weren’t to be denied though, equalising through in-form striker Ciaran Diver before Scott Morton pounced late on to seal what could prove to be a pivotal three points in the title race.

Quigley is adamant he has his sights trained on finishing in one of the top three promotion spaces before he’ll think about turning his attention to bagging the league trophy.

He told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “It was a really enjoyable game. It would have been a great watch for a neutral.

“They’re a very good side and they pass the ball well on the Astro. We do too so we were both trying to play the game the right way.

“We lost two sloppy goals, switching off for the first one before getting hit straight from the kick-off in the second half.

“I think we were worth the win in the end, though. We worked very hard and showed good resilience not to let the heads drop when they went 2-1 up.

“Ashfield would have gone ahead of us in the table with a game in hand on us if they’d won it, so it was crucial not to lose it for us.

“The main aim for us this season is getting promotion. The First Division is where I think the club should be as a minimum and my focus is on getting us back where we belong before turning our attention to anything else.”

Renfrew are back on home soil this weekend after a tricky run of three away fixtures, welcoming Ardeer Thistle to New Western Park.

Quigley is confident his side can keep pulling in the points they need to ensure their promotion dream becomes a reality this season.

He said: “We’ve had three tough games away from home and picked up seven points, which is a good return.

“It’ll be good to be back on home soil though and hopefully we can get back to winning ways there after a draw and a defeat in our last two home league games.

“The league’s very tight and the likes of Craigmark and Maybole especially have games in hand on us so we need to keep on picking up wins.

“Any losses we’ve had this season, barring the Maryhill loss, have been down to us not performing. If we can keep applying ourselves in the right manner we should be fine.”
