Renee Rouleau skincare tips: Demi Lovato and Lili Reinhart's beauty guru explains why your routine isn't working

Skincare pro Renee Rouleau has a reputation. The millennial pink-tressed expert, whose products are credited with clearing even the worst breakouts, has been praised everywhere from Reddit threads to the Instagram accounts of her celebrity clientele.

She's worked with stars including Demi Lovato, who she prepped for the Grammys with a 12-step facial, to The Blonde Salad blogger Chiara Ferragni, who swears by her acne-fighting products.

Rising pop star and former Girl Meets World star Sabrina Carpenter told Vogue that Rouleau's Triple Berry Smoothing Peel is the one product that keeps her "sane" and credits it with her "brilliant glow."

Riverdale star Lili Reinhart is another super fan. "Toner kind of changed my life. I use Renee Rouleau. It's so good. My skin just drinks it," she told Byrdie.

So what easy skincare hacks can we pick up from the aesthetician? Here are five mistakes you might have been making with your skincare routine - and why wipes are generally a bad idea.

Don't leave your skin bare for more than sixty seconds

"It’s important to move to the next step of your skincare routine quickly after cleanser. I never leave my skin bare for longer than 60 seconds after washing my face because it doesn’t take long for moisture evaporation to occur.

I immediately apply an alcohol-free toner (Moisture Infusion Toner is a great one for hydrating the skin) to deliver water to thirsty cells and avoid that awful dry, tight feeling. Skin cells are like fish and need water to live. Without it, your skin’s health is compromised, which is never ideal in the quest for plump, dewy and bouncy looking skin. Since I wash my face twice every day, that’s 730 times a year that I risk the chance of dehydrating my skin during the cleansing process if I don’t do it just right."

Don't skip in-flight skincare

"For years, skincare experts have been suggesting that you mist your skin with a hydrating spray to keep it moist. This is a no-no, for sure! The worst thing you can do is spray those misters on the skin. Why? Because since the air is so dry, it looks for water wherever it can get it. Since water attracts water, when you spray the skin, it draws water from the skin’s deepest layers and evaporates into the dry air. The result is even drier skin! Instead, apply a facial oil every hour to keep skin hydrated.

Face wipes don't really work

"While many people love cleansing wipes for their convenience, I never recommend them to remove make-up because they don’t truly clean the skin. Instead, they smear dirt, bacteria, oil, and make-up across it. Using a cleanser without any water will dissolve dirt in the oily portion of the soap molecule only and remove it onto the wipe. It’s the actual rinsing action from water that removes it and cleans the skin. Using a wipe is like applying cleanser to your face with soap and then not washing it."

You can (almost) always wear make-up

"I wear foundation every day because I consider it to be a form of skincare. The ingredients in most make-up products today include titanium dioxide, which is used in sunscreen. Titanium dioxide is also used in a lot of powder make-up, which doesn’t necessarily say “SPF” due to the regulations required to write that on packaging. I still recommend wearing SPF protection daily, but for me, wearing foundation adds an additional layer of support and protects skin."

Get your eyes checked

"You may not necessarily think of your eye exam having anything to do with skincare but it’s important to get your eyes checked as it can help avoid unnecessary wrinkles.

Of course, you should check your vision for your eye health, but this can also help you stop needless squinting which equals wrinkles you can avoid! I hear complaints about under-eye lines and wrinkles starting to appear when my clients are between the ages of 29 and 33. For a lot of people, it freaks them out.

This is certainly understandable because it’s the first sign of the skin’s ageing process. When you strain your eyes to try to see, you end up squinting. In addition to getting this checked, you can also use an eye serum like my Overnight Eye Serum to help smooth away fine lines and crepey skin."
