The French carmaking giant Renault on Wednesday announced plans to put a new city-friendly electric car on the market from 2025 – at an entry-level price of less than 20,000 euros.

The Renault Legend, part of the company’s electric car division Ampere, is to be built in Europe.

The “uncompromising city vehicle” will reportedly offer efficiency with energy consumption of 10 kilowatt-hours per 100km, compared with about 10 kilowatt-hours for similar vehicles currently on the market.

Ampere is planning seven electric models by 2031, of which around one million vehicles are to be produced each year.

According to Reuters, the vehicles will be produced at the Slovenian plant in Novo Mesto, where the Twingo and its electric version are manufactured.

Cheaper to make

Renault has forecast that sales in its electric car division will more than double to over €25 billion by 2031 as it slashes production costs to bring prices more in line with those of cheaper combustion engine vehicles.

Parity with combustion engines vehicles should be reached within the next four to five years.

To ward off increased competition from cheaper Chinese electric cars, Ampere aims to reduce by the cost of manufacturing through 2027 and beyond by 40 percent.

Ampere says it employs over 11,000 people, a third of whom are engineers, and aims to become a European leader in the electric vehicle market.
