Renault Clio owners have proved they have plenty of Va Va Voom after being named the randiest on the road. A third of owners of the French hatchback have admitted to getting raunchy in their vehicle within the last year.
The Mirror reports that a poll of 2,000 people found 24% claimed to have romped with their partner in a car. And the Clio proved the most popular model for getting the windows steamy.
The car – which Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and burlesque star Dita Von Teese helped promote in the famous ‘Va Va Voom’ TV ad – has long been marketed as a car for those with an active love life. It was also immortalised in a series of classic commercials featuring the characters Nicole and Papa, which ran from 1991 to 1998.
The original ad saw Nicole checking her father was asleep in his garden chair before sneaking off in her Clio to go on a date. But her dad was actually awake – and headed off on his own date in his Renault. The ads were said to have boosted sales by more than 300,000.
The Clio's lack of room apparently failed to put off those considering some back-seat action. Dave Sanders, 28, of Ely in Cambridgeshire was one of the Clio owners who admitted getting passionate with his girlfriend in his motor.
He said: “There’s not much room in a Clio and the windows get a bit steamy but it’s cosy and fun.”
The poll, by insurance broker Tempcover, found 31% of BMW 3 Series drivers enjoyed romping in their car, followed by 30% of Audi A4 owners. A Tempcover spokesman said: “Cars aren’t sexy because they go fast. Their real appeal is providing a mobile space where secret intimacies can be freely exchanged.”
