Renaissance Man Patrick Mahomes Serving as Chiefs’ Emergency Punter

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes seemingly has done it all in seven professional seasons. He’s won two Super Bowls with a franchise that hadn’t won a championship in 50 years. He’s revolutionized the quarterback position, incorporating improvisation and baseball mechanics into his game. It seems likely he’ll retire one day with the ballyhooed “best of his generation” tag.

However, he may one day add another notch to his résumé: punter.

Kansas City special teams coordinator Dave Toub told reporters Thursday that the Chiefs’ emergency punter is none other than their future Hall of Fame gunslinger.

“The backup punter? Yeah, we had a plan,” Toub said. “We had a plan, and believe it or not, [Mahomes] is our backup punter.”

Kansas City’s regular punter, Tommy Townsend, played through a knee injury in the Chiefs’ 19-8 win over the Broncos on Oct. 12.

Mahomes never has punted in a college or professional game, but according to Toub, the five-time Pro Bowler regularly demonstrates his special teams chops.

“He can do it,” Toub said. “He shows me all the time. He’s out there going on Saturday hitting punts. He can do it all, that guy.”
