Remove yellow pillow stains with 5c kitchen staple

An expert has shared their 5c hack on how to get rid of yellow stains commonly found on pillows.

There are several reasons why pillows turn yellow, but the most common cause of these stains is sweat, as people perspire while they sleep.

The more someone sweats, the more moisture seeps through the pillowcase and onto their pillow, causing the stains.

Hair may be the culprit, especially if it’s particularly oily, or people often go to bed with wet or damp hair.

However, there may now be a solution as fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have taken to dedicated cleaning pages to share their recommendations for cleaning pillows and removing stains, reports Express.

Hannah Webster wrote: “Hi, how does everyone remove yellow stains from their pillows, mine is covered in them.

“I’ve tried using baking soda and white vinegar, but the stains are still there. What else can I try?”

The first thing to know is that the longer the yellow stains are there, the harder they’ll be to get rid of.

This means getting in there and cleaning them the first time you notice any type of yellowing and not putting it off.

Technically, households should be washing their pillows a minimum of twice a year, regardless of stains.

The Facebook post received over 300 comments from other cleaning enthusiasts ready to share their top laundry tips when it comes to cleaning pillows.

While there was a vast array of cleaning product suggestions, the most popular was to use a dishwasher tablet.

Cat Christine said: “Use a dishwasher tablet in your washing machine. It’s a no-effort hack to get all the stains off in just one wash cycle.”

Sandra Moore commented: “I always use a dishwasher tablet to wash my pillows and any white laundry. My whites and pillows have never looked so white.”

Mandy Williams-Moss wrote: “Add a dishwasher tablet to your washing machine when cleaning your pillow with nothing else, and it’ll come out gleaming.”

Steven Reader replied: “Nothing has given me better results when washing my pillow than a dishwasher tablet has.”

Dishwasher tablets do not only give effective cleaning results, but they are such a cheap kitchen staple.

A pack of 30 dishwasher tablets can be picked up from for around €1.50. This works out as 5c per tablet.

This cleaning product can also be picked up from other major supermarkets, such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

Other Mrs Hinch fans suggested using soda crystals to remove yellow stains from pillows.

Rachel Allen said: “I add a cup of soda crystals to my washing machine when cleaning my pillows. It works wonders.”

Lyn Keith commented: “I’ve never seen better results than what soda crystals offer.”

Sylvia Smith advised: “Use soda crystals. Not only will it remove pillow stains but it also helps to keep the washing machine clean.”

Sharon Bardin added: “Don’t use white vinegar in your washing machine, it damages it. Use soda crystals instead.”
