Remembering Geno Smith’s iconic line against the Broncos

The Seattle Seahawks are set to take the field against the Denver Broncos in Week 1 at Lumen Field. If this sounds familiar, it’s because we lived through this only two years ago. The 2022 Seahawks were entering their first season in a decade without Russell Wilson, and they would have to face his heavily-favored Broncos to begin this new era.

The vibes going into that fateful Monday Night Football game could not have been more opposite than they are today. Denver was the darling “it” team of the NFL to watch, with folks considering them to even be darkhorse Super Bowl contenders. Meanwhile, the Seahawks were picked to be among the worst teams in the league.

Instead, the destiny of both teams went in polar opposite directions. The Seahawks finished 9-8 that year and made the playoffs, as well as going 9-8 the following season. Meanwhile, Wilson and the Broncos had the most embarrassing season in recent memory. Although Wilson was much better in 2023, he wasn’t good enough to not be cut by Denver after only two years (and before his mega extension kicked in.)

But perhaps the most memorable part of Seattle’s 17-16 upset victory was quarterback Geno Smith’s postgame quote. Smith was largely written off, having spent several years as a backup following the terrible start to his career with the New York Jets. Well, Smith had quite the message to those who wrote him off.

Smith finished the 2022 campaign as the official Comeback Player of the Year. Now, he is entering into his third season as the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. With a pair of Pro Bowl appearances to his name, I think it’s safe to say Smith still isn’t interested in writing back.
