Remembering Fr Lourdino: A great Goan composer is resurrected 25 years after death

PANAJI: Twenty-five years after his death, the music of Fr Lourdino Barreto, one of Goa's greatest classical musicians, is being resurrected at a series of concerts in his memory.

A troupe of 41 singers and musicians, led by Barreto's protege Fr Romeo Monteiro, performed the concerts at Galgibaga and Old Goa, with the final one scheduled on Sunday at the Mae de Deus church in Saligao, where Barreto lived in the seminary for many years.

"The first part of our concert will be parts of the Requiem, praying for the maestro's eternal repose, and the second part will be excerpts from some of his liturgical compositions," said Monteiro.

Barreto was also the legendary director of western music at Kala Academy, and was responsible for the music education of a generation of Goan musicians.

Like many young boys of his time, Barreto, born in 1938, attained his initial music education at the parochial school. Then, at Rachol, he continued to excel, under the guidance of Maestro Camilo Xavier.
