Liz Truss has resigned as Prime Minister outside 10 Downing Street today, making her the shortest-serving PM in British history. Her chaotic 44-day premiership saw her lose the backing of Tory MPs and avid followers, with her length of tenure being mocked online and even compared to a 'wet lettuce'.
One comedian has likened her record-breaking time inside No 10 to the duration mourners queued to see the late Queen Elizabeth II lying-in-state - and the comparison is shocking. Stand-up comedian Ivo Graham wrote on Twitter : "There are people who were in the Queue for 2% of Truss's time as PM."
At its longest, the wait time to see the Queen's coffin was more than 24 hours, running a maximum of 10 miles long from Westminster to Southwark.
Thousands of people stood through the freezing cold in the night, without food, bedding and toilets, for a whole two percent of the time Liz Truss held out as PM.
Other social media users have poked fun at Ms Truss' short spell, listing things that have lasted longer than her 44-day tenure.
Magician David Blaine survived without food in a perspex box for the same amount of time, and B&Q's generous returns policy outlives her duration at Downing Street.
Kim Kardashian's second marriage made it 28 days longer and even the Conservative Party leadership race beat Truss' six-week premiership.
Liz Truss gave a notably short resignation speech outside No 10, reflecting the record-breaking brevity of her time as Prime Minister.
Only 25 hours after she vowed "I am a fighter not a quitter", the outgoing leader resigned and quit as PM.
Truss spent one minute and 30 seconds speaking at Downing Street - a considerably shorter time than her predecessors.
She said: "I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.
"This morning I met the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady.
"We've agreed that there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week."
Truss added: "This will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plan and maintain our country's economic stability and national security."
"I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen. Thank you."
The resignation smashes the record of the shortest-serving Prime Minister George Canning, who died in office after just 119 days.
Another Tory leadership contest will now take place to elect the new PM, with another leader set to be in power by October 28.
A YouGov poll of Conservative Party members found 63 percent think former PM Boris Johnson would be a good replacement.
Johnson reluctantly resigned as the country's leader in July after a string of scandals, including Partygate.
