Remains of US bomb cyclone to unleash stormy weather onto UK

The remnants of a bomb cyclone that has wrecked havoc across the US are on course to bring unsettled weather to the UK - including Nottingham - forecasters say. According to the latest predictions by experts, there will be plenty of wet and windy conditions sweeping across the country over the next few days - with a stormy New Years Eve on the cards for many.

The bomb cyclone currently gripping North America has pulled temperatures down to deadly, icy lows. So far, a total of 57 people have reportedly died due to the brutal sub-zero conditions and mass snowfall, the Mirror reports.

And now, remains of the cyclone are due to cross the Atlantic jet stream to bring turbulent weather to British shores. The unsettled conditions are likely to last for the rest of the week - with cloud and rain forecast over the next three days for Nottingham.

It comes as a severe weather warning for heavy rain has been put in place for large swathes of Scotland. The alert will be in force from 3am on Friday and warns of possible flooding and travel disruption. Meanwhile, flood warnings remain in place across various parts of England and Wales following recent rainfall.

Discussing the latest UK forecast amid the oncoming arrival of the leftover cyclone weather, meteorologist Simon Partridge said: "The UK weather is going to remain unsettled with further spells of wet and windy weather due to the strengthening of the jet stream because of the weather in the US.

Deadly bomb cyclone that has sent temperatures plunging in the US is also causing the UK to experience wet and windy weather, the Met Office said (PA)

"The effect it's having on the UK is nowhere near as dramatic because that system has brought up a lot of cold air further south, across the US." He added that the US storm had caused the jet stream to strengthen due to the sharp contrast in temperatures it creates - adding pressure to the weather system.

He also said that Thursday would likely be a cool day with showers affecting a few areas, while Friday would be more unsettled. Frosts and fog are also likely overnight over the next few days across much of the UK.

In Nottingham, the Met Office forecasts heavy rain from 7am to 12pm on Friday (Dec 29) as temperatures reach highs of 11C and lows of 8C under cloudy skies. It's set to be a similar picture on Saturday (Dec 31) with a heavy downpours expected on and off throughout the day.

On New Years Day (Jan 1), it'll be a largely cloudy day with highs of 9C and lows of 4C. However, there is due to be some rain around lunchtime.

A Met Office spokesperson added: "Remaining windy with persistent rain spreading to all areas during Thursday morning, clearing to leave a brighter afternoon with occasional blustery showers. From Saturday to Monday, it is remaining unsettled at first, with spells of rain and stronger winds interspersed by sunny spells and showers. Likely becoming drier and slightly colder with lighter winds by Monday."

For the week commencing Monday, January 2, they added: "Unsettled weather is likely to stay as we enter the new year, with rain for some, particularly in the far southeast and north initially. There is potential for some heavier bursts at times, particularly for western facing hills."
