Remains of up to five people among north Dublin construction worker discovery

Remains of up to five people were among the discovery made on a north Dublin building site yesterday.

The shocking discovery in Clonshaugh was made when a group of construction workers were digging up the ground. Animal bones were also discovered which has led to the belief that it could have been an ancient burial site.

While gardai have said they are looking at all circumstances, it is believed that bones are not related to any ongoing investigations. The bones are understood to be historic. The Office of the State Anthropologist was alerted and will visit the scene.

A source told Dublin Live: “It looks like it was a historic burial site, going back a very very long time but nobody knows at this stage just how old the remains are. There was anywhere from three to five bodies found with animal bones in the mix as well.

“There will have to be a full examination to determine who these people were and how they ended up buried there but that could take a bit of time before the full facts are established. Anthropologists will head out and so will the National Museum of Ireland to examine it. They’re definitely human remains but they’re ancient.”

Gardai said yesterday: “Gardai are investigating all the circumstances following the discovery of skeletal remains at a building site in Clonshaugh, Dublin 17, this morning 19th April 2023.

“Gardaí have sealed off the area to allow for a technical examination. Office of the State Anthropologist has been requested to attend the scene. The outcome of these examinations will determine the course of the investigation.”
