Remains of third body found at site of demolished mill following deadly fire

The remains of a third victim have been discovered at a demolished mill in Oldham, which was the site of a huge fire earlier this year.

Specialist teams have been searching the site of the Bismark House Mill on Bower Street after the remains of two bodies were uncovered.

The first was discovered by demolition workers on Saturday, July 23, prompting a major incident to be declared.

This was just two days after Greater Manchester Police received a tip that four Vietnamese nationals had been missing since May 7 - the date of a huge blaze at the mill. At the time, fire crews believed nobody was inside.

They spent four days extinguishing the flames before demolition work started on the building. The remains of a second victim were then found on Wednesday, July 27.

Police have more human remains have been found which indicate a third victim. Officers believe the four Vietnamese nationals may have been inside at the time of the huge fire.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes, GMP’s Victim Identification lead, said: “I speak on behalf of all involved in this operation when I say that our thoughts are with the potential family members in Vietnam. Specially-trained officers have been in direct contact with them and continue to liaise with partner agencies to ensure they are fully updated and supported.

“At the scene, extensive search and recovery work continues to ensure any further remains are respectfully recovered. Meanwhile, the investigation team is following several lines of enquiry relating to the fire and activities at the mill beforehand. Any criminal offences identified as part of their investigation will be progressed immediately and appropriately.
