'Relieved' - Adam Lallana sends Liverpool message after attending Champions League final with son

Adam Lallana has shared a message of solidarity with Liverpool supporters after witnessing the shocking treatment of match-goers at the Champions League final in Paris on Saturday.

After waiting hours to gain entry into the stadium amid a highly hostile environment, a number of fans with legitimate tickets were pepper sprayed by riot police and also came under attack from opportunist gangs, with many gaining entry to the stadium by climbing over fences and under turnstiles whilst supporters struggled to gain entry themselves.

The ex-Anfield star was in attendance with his young son and admitted in a social media post that he was relieved just to have got home from the match safely.

Writing in a post on Instagram, he said: "Felt very fortunate to be able to attend the final in Paris. I’m fully aware of the how precious those tickets were. I was there as a supporter. I was also there as a parent. How fans were treated was unacceptable. It was dangerous. Attending a football match shouldn’t make anyone feel unsafe. This one did.

"The supporters were let down and they deserve answers for how they were treated. It was LFC and Real Madrid on Saturday, but it could have been followers of any team. I think that’s important to remember. Like so many others, I was relieved my son and I made it home safely."

The problems outside the ground forced the kick-off time to be delayed with the match eventually getting underway at 8.36pm UK time - over half an hour later than scheduled. Liverpool would go on to lose the match 1-0 as Real Madrid lifted the European Cup for a record 14th time, ending Jurgen Klopp's team's hopes of completing a cup treble.

Lallana added: "Big love to Jürgen, Jordan (Henderson) and all the players for an incredible campaign. A special group and a special club. They’ll go again"

On Monday evening, UEFA announced that is has commissioned an independent report into the scenes that delayed the match.
