Relegation would spell 'disaster' for Leeds United says Gus Poyet

Gus Poyet says it would be a 'disaster' if Leeds United suffered relegation, and believes 34 to 35 points will keep them in the Premier League.

Leeds are only separated by the relegation zone on goal difference and have amassed 22 points from 25 league games so far this term.

The Whites have collected just one win from their last 12 in the Premier League, and Poyet, who had a spell as assistant manager at Elland Road, expects the relegation battle to go right down to the wire.

“I think it’s going to go down to the last few games of the season,” the Greece boss told Neue Casinos 24. “I think it is going to be tremendous, the relegation battle is going to be immense."

"Not only because of the quantity of teams who are going to be involved, but because of the quality of the teams and how big they are. Leeds, Everton and Co. are big teams and if they go down it could be a disaster. Especially for Leeds, after so many years trying to come back up to the Premier League and then a few years later if they go down."

He added: “It is going to be very close and that’s why I think it is important for Leeds to somehow keep adding points, any points you can get are important. This is because at the end of the day you need to get to, we used to say 40 points and then we said 38, but now I think if you get to 34 or 35 points then you are safe. So yes I think it is going to go to the wire.”
