Referendum play back for one night only to mark independence vote anniversary

A PLAY looking at the 2014 independence referendum will return for one night only on the 10th anniversary of the vote.

Director and playwright Julie Calderwood said it is “so exciting” to bring her play Our Generation back to the Glasgow stage next week, exactly 10 years since the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.

Our Generation takes us back in time as Glasgow prepares for the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence.

Married couple Dave and Mary debate the issues from very different angles – can their marriage survive the pushes and pulls of a nation?

Written and directed by Springburn native Calderwood, Our Generation promises “a good night out” filled with comedy, history, nostalgia and political drama.

The play is performing for one night only at The Boardwalk in Glasgow on Wednesday, September 18 – the first time since its highly praised run at the Govanhill Festival in 2019.

Calderwood said: “It is so exciting to be sharing Our Generation with new audiences. I wrote the play in 2017, when the effects of Brexit started coming into place.

“I started looking back on the 2014 referendum and thinking about Scotland’s place in the world. Now I’ve brought it up to date as so much has changed.

“However you voted in the 2014 referendum, I think the play will give you a reminder of what it was like in that time, and maybe a renewed resolve for finding the next steps for the future of the country. There’s a bit of catharsis I think.

“As we’ve been rehearsing the play, I’ve been thinking about how Scotland still grapples with our identity today.

“That theme is even more pertinent now than in 2014, so I think the play will give audiences a chance to reflect on Scotland’s place in the world, how much has changed since the referendum, as well as lots of laughs and a good night out.”

Producer David Hewitson added: “I am so excited to help bring Our Generation to the stage at this important 10-year anniversary of the vote. Everyone who lived in Scotland in 2014 will remember the electricity of the referendum and how different the world was back then.”
