Ref watch as Don Robertson Rangers vs Celtic decisions put under spotlight

Three goals, four bookings, one offside and no trips to the monitor. By all accounts, it was a fairly quiet afternoon for Don Robertson on the field at Ibrox as Rangers defeated Celtic.

The man in the middle will be pleased with his display in the heated fixture with no requirement for any decisions to be overturned.

The experienced whistler could have seen himself face major scrutiny after the fallout from the last derby between Celtic and Rangers with an admission over a major VAR blunder at Hampden.

But Robertson handled the occasion well with efforts made to allow the match to flow while equally keeping tensions from spilling over.

It took just five minutes before the first VAR check with a penalty check after a number of deflections in the box. Nico Raskin and Ianis Hagi took aim but saw their efforts blocked - the check was quickly over through with no handball.

Two minutes later and Rangers were ahead with Ianis Hagi narrowing a strike into the bottom corner. Rangers pinched the ball back after a slack Liam Scales pass with no issues in the build-up to Hagi stroking home.

Tempers flared with 31 minutes on the clock as Hagi went down under challenge from Alistair Johnston. The Celtic defender did connect with Hagi on the back of the head with his arm but there was no intervention from VAR.

Johnston was deemed to be in a natural position and there didn't appear to be obvious malice from the defender in the accidental collision.

Two minutes later and the first yellow card was dished out by Robertson. Callum McGregor was cautioned as he flicked out his leg to prevent a quick free-kick.

Hagi was again felled after 36 minutes, and this time had grounds for frustration as he shot wide before being bundled down by Paulo Bernardo. Nothing was given when there could have been little complaints over a free-kick.

Two minutes into stoppage time in the first period and Jefte was booked for Rangers for catching Nico Kuhn in the face with his arm. The Brazilian full-back swiped at the ball and then connected with Kuhn's face leaving the winger bleeding.

Robertson produced a yellow with the call deemed correct by VAR official Nick Walsh as it was a reckless use of his arm and not worthy of being upgraded to violent conduct.

After blowing for half time, Robertson showed Nico Raskin a yellow following an angry exchange with Callum McGregor. The Celtic captain escaped any punishment - and was already on a yellow.

It was perhaps harsh to book Raskin with the pair having both given as good as they got in the minor flashpoint.

Into the second half and Robertson had to rule out a Celtic goal for offside after Kyogo Furuhashi did brilliantly well to improvise a finish at Ibrox. However, the striker was ahead of the Rangers rearguard.

The flag went up and a quick VAR check later and the decision was confirmed.

Reo Hatate would then go down after a bump from Mohamed Diomande. There was nothing in the incident more than a simple coming together with a VAR check dismissing any need to intervene.

On the hour mark, Kuhn would be booked for a foul on Jefte. The Rangers defender skipped past Kuhn and was then tripped as he looked to break free - a simple yellow for Robertson.

With 66 minutes gone, Robin Propper doubled Rangers' lead. He was quickest to react to slam home at the back post after Raskin's header was saved. There were no issues in the attacking phase of play for VAR to scrutinise and he was clearly onside.

On 70 minutes there was a penalty check after Adam Idah looked to have blocked a shot with his arm as he slid inside his own box. The striker had his arm in a natural position though with it tucked into his side. No penalty was given with a corner the award.

With nine minutes left, Rangers made it 3-0 with Danilo tucking home after Cameron Carter-Vickers' block - which prompted handball appeals - fed the ball into his path.

While Robertson enjoyed a fairly quiet afternoon regarding on the field action he was called in to deal with a shocking incident off the pitch with Arne Engels struck by a coin lobbed from the stands.

Robertson checked the player was fit to continue before handing the coin to a security officer where it was then bagged as evident by a police officer.
