Reese Witherspoon's 'old money' cabinets bring a French cottage aesthetic to her kitchen – and the result is timeless

Reese Witherspoon.

It's easy to understand why so many of us aspire for towards an 'old money' aesthetic. The movement prioritizes quality products and design features that are classic enough to transcend fleeting trends – meaning, in terms of interiors, we often see versatile neutrals and soothing materials that will look just as beautiful in another decade.

The formula of ageless hues and quality materials is the basis of the old-money aesthetic in every room of the home, but arguably, no space leaves room for experimentation like the kitchen. And Reese Witherspoon has set the precedent for this space. While we can spend hours talking about her dusty gray color choice, it is the kitchen cabinet's glass fronting that, designers say, truly brings the old money look alive.

'Glass cabinets are a traditional fixture in kitchens, especially those with “old money” aesthetic – that means classic and timeless materials and finishes that withstand the fast-paced, ever-changing trend cycles,' comments Michele Iapicco, the principal at Iapicco Design Studio.

In Witherspoon's space, she has chosen clear glass, meaning her crockery collection is on show. However, there are ways to follow suit, even if we'd rather keep our plates, dishes, and glasses hidden.

'Glass-front cabinets are a great accent to add to your kitchen, and there are different ways to go about it. Frosted glass adds a layer of dimension but obscures the stack of dishes behind it. If you’re not so concerned with curating your cabinets, frosted is probably the way to go,' Iapicco explains.

Alternatively, we can opt for a glass front with a lattice feature to bring more yet more depth to a quiet luxury kitchen. Depending on our choice of glass, Iapicco says we can either create a 'whimsical,' 'traditional,' or 'French country cottage' style to our space.

Upgrading our cabinets may seem like a timely job, but tapping into Witherspoon's look doesn't need to be so time or cost-consuming.

'You can bring this look into your home by simply changing a few doors in your existing kitchen. Depending on your layout, selecting the upper cabinet on either side of your sink or stove can change the look and feel of your space,' Iapicco says. 'Also, if there’s one wall that is more of a “focal wall,” select cabinets there to make an impact. I will add that you should avoid using glass on lower cabinets and select an area in your kitchen where adding glass to upper cabinets will make an impact.'
