Reese Witherspoon announces Elle Woods open casting call for Legally Blonde prequel

The search for the next Elle Woods has officially begun for the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series.

Reese Witherspoon, who famously portrayed the character, announced the open casting in an Instagram video on Wednesday.

The Oscar-winning actress shared: "Our search for the high school version of Elle Woods is officially ON!"

“With our friends @primevideo we’re making the casting process totally OPEN, so you can submit your auditions at the link in my bio… I’m SO excited to see all your fabulous takes on everyone’s favourite Gemini vegetarian!”

Encouraging aspiring actors, she added: "I can’t wait to tell you that we are starting the casting process, and we are making it open! Yes, that is right. This is an open casting for the young Elle Woods when she was in high school.

“So, send your submissions to the link in my bio. I cannot wait to see all the Elle Woods out there. This is going to be really fun!”

The Legally Blonde prequel, currently titled Elle, was first revealed by Reese Witherspoon in May during an Amazon advertisers presentation.

The series, produced in partnership with her media company Hello Sunshine, will explore Elle Woods' teenage years, shedding light on the experiences that shaped her into the determined woman audiences first met in the original film.

Released in 2001, Legally Blonde earned $141 million at the global box office and received two Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) for Witherspoon.

The film’s success led to the 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde and a Broadway musical adaptation in 2007.

The prequel series announcement comes as fans eagerly await updates on the upcoming Legally Blonde 3, which was initially slated for release in 2020.

Laura Kittrell will take on the role of showrunner and executive producer for the Legally Blonde prequel series. Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, and Marc Platt will also serve as executive producer alongside Witherspoon and Kittrell.
