Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Loftus-Cheek - Latest Chelsea injury news after Southampton loss

Chelsea suffered their second defeat of the season as Southampton outbattled and outfought Thomas Tuchel's side on Tuesday night.

The Blues had taken the lead through Raheem Sterling early in the first half, but goals before half-time from Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong completed the first-half turnaround, and the west Londoners never really responded in the second half.

In fact, it could have been 4-1 if it wasn't for the defensive brilliance of Marc Cucurella and Thiago Silva. With all Chelsea games, there are injury woes, and this fixture certainly didn't disappoint in that regard.

With this in mind, football.london takes a look at the injuries and their respective statuses after Tuesday night's affair and ahead of the weekend's fixture against West Ham. By that time, though, Todd Boehly may have provided Tuchel with the required tools to compete.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

The midfielder completed 45 minutes during the first half of the clash against Southampton.

However, he was hooked off at half-time for Mateo Kovacic in what initially looked like a tactical change.

Images then appeared on TV showing Loftus-Cheek with some strapping around his knee. BT said it was a hamstring injury. A worrying sign considering the injury predicament in the midfield and the lack of options available to Tuchel ahead of West Ham.

Expected return date: unknown

Reece James

The shock news before the clash on Tuesday was that of the Blues right-back being left behind in London.

It was revealed by football.london that Chelsea's star in the early parts of 2022/23 was ill and therefore didn't travel to the South Coast.

Tuchel made a joke pre-match when he said: "He trained badly! No, no, it's not true. He's sick, unfortunately, and could not travel."

Expected return date: West Ham (A)- Saturday, September 3

Trevoh Chalobah

As revealed once more by football.london, Chalobah suffered a small knock at Stamford Bridge over the weekend and, as such, was not in the squad.

Tuchel confirmed this news pre-match: "Trevoh Chalobah is injured from the match [on Saturday]. It's a tight squad. When you look at our upcoming schedule, see the game today and see the bench, it's a bit worrying in terms of already having a lot of key players out and not available. A team on our level needs concurrence in the squad and needs everybody available to push each other to the limit. Hopefully, we will turn things around soon."

Expected return date: Unknown

N'Golo Kanté

The French midfielder missed last weekend's trip up north, having hobbled off the pitch against Tottenham after an excellent display and won't be available to face his former side. The 31-year-old is set to miss a handful of fixtures over the coming weeks.

What Tuchel said: "We're talking about weeks. Four weeks plus."

Expected return date: Unknown

Conor Gallagher

However, as one suspension ends, another one starts. Gallagher was shown two yellow cards in the first half against Leicester and was forced to sit out of the game with Southampton on Tuesday.

He should be back in contention for Saturday's London derby.

What Tuchel said: "It was a bad decision from Conor and gave us a massive disadvantage in these conditions where we come from a defeat, and it's so hot."
