Reece James delivers brutal verdict on January transfer window after Chelsea's £300m spend

Reece James has opened up on his "hate" for the January transfer window after Chelsea spent over £300million on eight new signings last month.

The Blues signed David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, Joao Felix (loan), Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernandez in January and now have a completely new-look squad. It's over now, though, much to James' delight.

James has been speaking about while he enjoys the unpredictability of playing with new players, he actually hates the transfer window – especially the mid-season one when there are games going on at the same time.

"I quite enjoy playing with new players, you don't really know what to expect from them," James said to Sky Sports. "I know they all come in from different places all over the world and different teams.

"They are all here to help at the end of the day. The quicker they are comfortable and settled the quicker they can maximise their help."

The England right-back continued: "The transfer window is one of my biggest hates. The January period is always so busy with many games and then you have transfer noise as well. It's all a bit much in one month so I don't really listen too much."

With so much money spent over the past two transfer windows, there is much more pressured that's been piled on Chelsea and newly-appointed head coach Graham Potter. The 47-year-old has only been at Stamford Bridge for just over five months but with Todd Boehly flexing his financial power, the following pressure and expectancy was inevitable.

James is so confident regarding the new-look squad, though, and believes they are capable of winning anything. The 23-year-old defender thinks Chelsea have the potential to become "one of the best teams in the world" in the future.

"I don't think there's a trophy we cannot win," James added. "When that happens I do not know, but I think with the team we are building and the structure the club is turning into with all the young players.

"Once we play together for a longer period of time and everyone gains more experience I think we are going to be one of the best teams in the world. From the times I have played I have loved it and I enjoy working under him [Potter] every day."
