Reece James admits he is "devastated" after it was confirmed the Chelsea star would not be fit enough in time for England's World Cup efforts.
The defender has been facing a face against time to make the Three Lions' opener against Iran on November 21, but there was hope that he could be fit enough to take some part in his country's bid for glory. James hobbled off in a Champions League game against AC Milan in October.
Gareth Southgate had been sweating on his fitness with fellow regular Kyle Walker also experiencing injury difficulties. The Chelsea star has not made it back in time however with the player admitting in a statement that he knew he was up against it with such a short time to recover.
He penned a message on social media that read: "Devastated. "The minute I injured my knee, I knew the turn around to make the World Cup would be tight, but I always felt it was possible.
"I've worked harder than I ever thought I could to give myself the best chance of going and truly believed I could help the team. I appreciate there was a risk on both sides but it was one I was willing to take. Good luck to the boys. I'll be back soon. Stay safe and sending love."
James was set to play a key role for England having continued to flourish at club level. He was part of Southgate's Euro 2020 squad, making a solitary appearance against Scotland, and was tipped to play in a back three or as a right wing-back.
Who will start at right-back for England's opening World Cup game? Tell us what you think here.
Right-back is an area where England have particular depth, but James' absence will still be a major blow. Southgate has long trusted Kieran Trippier, who will now be fancied to occupy to start the opening game. Trent Alexander-Arnold, who continues to divide opinion, is now almost certain to go as another option.
Kalvin Phillips, who moved to Manchester City from Leeds in the summer, was a stalwart for the Three Lions at the Euros last summer but has been battling to be fully fit for much of the campaign. Pep Guardiola has said it is "likely" the midfielder will be fit for the tournament and his previous exploits could help him land a spot on the plane.
Injuries continued to rob big names of the chance to compete at a World Cup, further shining a light on the controversial decision to hold the tournament midseason. Two of France's leading lights, N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba, will both be absent in Qatar whilst Sadio Mane is sweating on his fitness.
