REDUNDANCIES have been announced by the owner of Scotland’s Spar shops.
Dundee-based CJ Lang & Son Ltd, which has operated out of the city since 1919, confirmed on Wednesday that a redundancy process is ongoing when approached by The Courier.
However, the food firm which states is one of Scotland’s largest independent companies and “very much” a family business would not confirm how many roles are affected.
It is reported that the number of positions being made redundant is in the double figures.
CJ Lang & Son’s distribution network and customer-facing roles would not be impacted, the Courier has reported.
The company supplies more than 300 Spar shops across Scotland and owns 107 company stores while maintaining a workforce of more than 1800 staff members.
The firm's chairman, Jim Hepburn, previously warned that the UK Government’s changes to the National Insurance employer contribution threshold could lead to fewer jobs at the firm.
A spokesperson for CJ Lang confirmed that a period of consultation has been entered.
“Unfortunately, we have entered into a period of consultation that may result in a small number of redundancies,” they told The Courier.
“We are providing assistance and support to affected employees during this period.
“These changes will not impact our customer facing store operations or our distribution network.
“We also remain committed to supporting all our independent retail partners.”
