Reduce window condensation ‘nightmare’ with €3 trick many ‘had no idea existed’

An Arctic blast has sent temperatures across Ireland tumbling, meaning many households have condensation to deal with.

Condensation is water beads that form when hot, moist air meets a cool surface. It manifests on windows in the colder months due to warm air from inside the home hitting the cold glass windows.

While it is mostly harmless, if windows aren't maintained, the moisture could develop into dangerous mould that can cause health issues like asthma, eczema and bronchitis.

With this in mind, social media users have been sharing their tricks for combating condensation, Mirror UK reports.

One person recently took to Reddit to share a video of them using a window vacuum to remove water from their window. However, in the comments, people shared less expensive ways to deal with the "nightmare", which has since gone viral.

One person said: "Must be a nightmare having single glazing."

To which a user replied: "It really is. It's like signing up for mould but for a LOT of rent."

Following this interaction, a fellow Reddit user shared their own "non-permanent" solution, writing: "You’re renting too? So there’s little you can do about it. Have you had a look at things like this as a non-permanent solution?"

They shared a link for a magnetic secondary glazing kit, with prices starting from €3.50. The price increases depending on the size of the window.

The description on the website explains that the product doesn't eliminate condensation but claims to help "reduce the worst visible effects".

They recommended a magnetic secondary glazing kit (The Plastic People)

It reads: "Condensation happens when the moisture content of warm air settles on a colder surface - the colder the air, the less moisture it can hold. Windows are typically colder than the air in a room and therefore a noticeable place for condensation. On the face of it, because Secondary Glazing will have little effect on the airborne moisture in the home, it cannot solve condensation problems.

"On the other hand, because Secondary Glazing helps keep heat in the home which can cause less moisture to condensate, and by insulating windows (the most obvious place for condensation to occur) it certainly can reduce the worst visible effects."

People online were impressed by the tip and vowed to check it out for themselves.

One person commented: "That's brilliant, I had no idea that existed. I'd be tempted to have quad glazing."

Another posted: "Thanks for sharing this, my rented place has double glazing except for ONE window, and now I'm tempted by this. Didn't know it was a thing."
