Reds’ Elly De La Cruz Signs Teammate’s Car Window That He Smashed in Batting Practice

Infielder Elly De La Cruz may be heading into his second season with the Cincinnati Reds, but he still has the ability and talent to blow teammates and fans away.

Exhibit A: The events of Feb. 20, when De La Cruz added “property damage” to his list of accomplishments.

In a live batting practice session against pitcher Hunter Greene, De La Cruz smashed the rear driver’s side window of his teammate’s SUV with a foul ball.

“You make more than me,” De La Cruz told Greene when the pitcher lightheartedly suggested the infielder pay for damages.

On Thursday, De La Cruz and Greene came together to commemorate the humorous event.

Both players signed the broken car window, leaving their signatures underneath its baseball-shaped divot.

De La Cruz, 22, is looking to improve on a 98-game rookie season in which he hit 13 home runs and swiped 35 bases—while becoming the face of an improved Reds team.

Greene, meanwhile, is entering his third campaign with Cincinnati after going 4–7 with a 4.82 ERA—but slightly improving his strikeouts per nine innings—in 2023.
