A beloved micropub in Redland looks like it is preparing to open after months of closure. Chums may soon be re-opening its doors after an application for an alcohol licence for the premises was registered with Bristol City Council.
The micropub, which was named CAMRA's Bristol and District branch pub of the year in 2018, shut in November last year after landlord Mark Farrell died. Mark had run the tiny pub housed in a converted shop next door to Wilson's restaurant since 2016, where it gained a strong local following thanks to its real ale selection, reasonable prices and regular live folk music.
In November, a statement was posted on the Chums website from Andy Williams saying: “Due to the sad and untimely death of Mark Farrell, owner and licensee of Chums micropub, we are closed until further notice.

“Thanks to all friends and customers for their kind words and thoughts, which are very much appreciated. I know you will all miss him.”
A note was also placed on the pub's door, which remained shuttered in the following months. But this week, it was replaced with a notice of re-application for the premises' alcohol licence from Bristol City Council.
The application details state that it is for "a small premises previously successfully trading as a micropub since 2016". It goes on to say: "The previous premises licence holder has passed away, and the licence has now lapsed.
"The application is to relicense the premises as a micropub focussing on real ale and traditional bar snacks. Proposed relevant licensable activities to be carried on or from the premises."
According to the notice, the pub plans to serve alcohol on Sundays from 12pm to 10..30pm, Mondays to Thursdays from 12pm to 11pm and Saturdays from 12pm to 11.30pm, with late-night refreshments on Fridays and Saturdays from 11pm to midnight.
