Tasmania seamer Jackson Bird has wound back the clock to run though South Australia's top order on the first day of the Sheffield Shield clash at Adelaide Oval.
After winning the toss and batting first, the Redbacks struggled their way to 6-171 at tea, with Bird claiming 4-43.
The 35-year-old former Test quick did all his damage in the first session, removing South Australia's top four before lunch.
Bird had the ball moving off the seam to have openers Henry Hunt and Jake Weatherald caught behind, before getting the key scalp of Travis Head.
Former Test skipper Tim Paine caught well behind the stumps in his second game back, diving to his left to remove Weatherald when Bird had squared up the left-hander.
Bird claimed Head's wicket in his next over for five when the left-hander inside-edged a yorker back onto his own stumps, before the right-armer trapped Jake Carder lbw for 13.
Fellow veteran Peter Siddle also removed South Australia's other Test incumbent when he got a ball through a driving Alex Carey's bat and pad on 25.
Sam Rainbird claimed Nathan McAndrew's wicket.
Jake Lehmann has offered the only real resistance for the Redbacks with an unbeaten 64.
He brought up his 50 close to the tea break when he pulled Bird for four for one of three straight boundaries, after earlier also taking a liking to Rainbird.
