Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito is set to undergo right elbow surgery on Tuesday, potentially sidelining him for the upcoming season. The decision was confirmed by Red Sox manager Alex Cora following Giolito's visit to Dr. Jeffrey R. Dugas in Alabama for a second opinion.
Manager Alex Cora stated that the surgery will address issues with the ligament in Giolito's elbow, with the full extent of the procedure to be determined during the operation. Giolito, who recently signed a lucrative two-year deal with the Red Sox, experienced discomfort after his second spring training start, prompting further evaluation.
This surgery marks the second significant procedure on Giolito's right elbow, with the 29-year-old previously undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2012 shortly after being drafted as the top overall pick by the Washington Nationals. Despite these setbacks, Giolito has established himself as a reliable pitcher in the majors, earning an All-Star selection in 2019 while playing for the Chicago White Sox.
Throughout his career, Giolito has demonstrated consistency by pitching over 160 innings in five of the last six seasons. The Red Sox will closely monitor his recovery process and provide updates on his rehabilitation as he aims to return to full strength.
