Red Is Already Trending, but We're Cleansing Our Color Palette by Upgrading to Red Wine Shades

The Fall 2023 runways served up many trends. But by far the most prolific was the color red. Just to be crystal clear, we're talking bright, basically cherry red. Ferragamo, Stella McCartney, Loewe and Gucci to name just a small handful. Although now that we're in winter and far enough removed from both Tomato Girl Summer and Strawberry Girl Summer, it's time to focus on new shades. Like red wine colors from merlot to burgundy.

Want proof it's time to make the move? Just ask Hailey Bieber. The pioneer of Strawberry Girl Summer, the model recently stepped out in a wine-hued statement coat. She also crushed it on Instagram decked out in a wine-colored strapless velvet dress. She's even moved on to wine makeup.

Now that you know the colors' seasonal origin story, let's talk about the many ways you can lean into the burgeoning trend. Since red wine hues are borderline neutrals, they're not hard to find. Everyone from Zimmermann to Emilia Wickstead to Coperni and even Gucci has stylish options. In fact, both the former and the latter created matching sets, if you're in the mood. (Feel free to wear several different shades together along with bold patterns and maybe even work in a vibrant red on occasion.)

Naturally, fast-fashion retailers took notice. Mango is a real treasure trove of deep reds. You can also embrace the palette via Zara, COS, Reformation and The Frankie Shop. Their price points are a little easier on your budget. Especially since you're probably knee-deep in Cyber Monday shopping right now.

The great thing about wine colors is that they can feel festive (velvet is practically a hallmark of the holidays), but not look out of context come January. So you can justify buying several pieces since you'll have ample time to show them off.
