Red Dead Redemption 2 online is coming - here's what you need to know

The multiplayer version of Rockstar Games' hugely popular Red Dead Redemption 2 is out on Tuesday.

Gamers in the UK will be able to play Red Dead Online around 1.30pm today - but only if they bought the Ultimate Edition version of the game.

Others will have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on the highly rated game, which is available on both PS4 and Xbox.

Those who played the Red Dead Redemption on its October 26 launch day will get access to Red Dead Online on Thursday, November 29, while it will be available to everyone from Friday, November 30.

Initially, Red Dead Online will be a beta test and developed over the next few months as the game's limits are tested.

If you bought the digital version of the game, access to Red Dead Online is automatic, while those with a physical version must redeem the code within the packaging via the PSN or Xbox store.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was an instant success when it was released last month, selling an incredible 17 million copies in the first fortnight.

In its opening weekend, it made £556 million and earned rave reviews for its storyline, gameplay and its honour system.

Set in 1899, central protagonist Arthur Morgan is forced to navigate the cruelty of the Old West transforming into the new America as part of the van der Linde gang.

Rockstar recruited more than 3,000 names working 100-hour weeks, and even used motion technology on horses to make their digital avatars seem more realistic than before for Red Dead Redemption 2.

The online version opens up the game's massive map of the Wild West for multiple players, allowing you to join up with other players and form your own gang to go exploring, hunting and fishing together.

You can also challenge other players to shootouts and take part in both spontaneous and set-piece battles.

Gamers can also set up their own hideouts or ride into other players' hideouts and compete in challenges.

Speaking about the announcement, Rockstar said: "With the gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2 as its foundation, Red Dead Online transforms the vast and deeply detailed landscapes, cities, towns and habitats of Red Dead Redemption 2 into a new, living online world ready to be shared by multiple players.

"Create and customize your character, tailor your abilities to suit your play style and head out into a new frontier full of things to experience."
