Record increase in migrant crossings at Canada-US border raises concerns

UNRWA truck crosses into Egypt from Gaza at Rafah border crossing

The northern border of the United States has become a growing concern as there has been a significant increase in migrant encounters, with a staggering 73% rise from 2022 to 2023. This underreported problem is impacting not only the counties along the border but also the migrants themselves, who are unprepared for the harsh winter conditions they face in upstate New York and Canada.

Law enforcement officials, such as Sheriff David Favreau of Clinton County, New York, have witnessed the consequences firsthand. The surge in numbers of desperate individuals attempting to cross the border has raised concerns about their safety. People who are desperate will go to great lengths to achieve their goals, but in this case, they are ill-equipped to handle the extreme weather conditions. With temperatures dropping into the teens at night, it is essential to be fully prepared with insulated gloves, boots, hats, and jackets. However, most of these migrants are sent to the area without any knowledge or expectation of the weather they will encounter.

Tragically, there have been incidents of drowning and hypothermia-related injuries. A recent international news article highlighted the perilous nature of the situation, reporting on repeated rescues of stranded migrants and the recovery of frozen bodies from rivers and forests. Disturbingly, among those affected are families with children and even a pregnant mother.

The lack of preparedness and the dangerous conditions these migrants face raise serious humanitarian concerns. It is evident that the current situation was not adequately planned, and there is a pressing need to address it urgently. From a law enforcement perspective, closing the border entirely would take several years to recover from, and in the meantime, organized crime associated with the migrant crisis is anticipated to increase. This not only poses a threat to the safety and well-being of individuals but also places a considerable burden on law enforcement officers.

The methods employed by migrants to reach the northern border vary. Some individuals have the financial means to afford transportation, such as air travel, allowing them to fly into Montreal and then make their way south to the border. Others are being smuggled or have purchased package deals from cartels, paying significant amounts to obtain maps and guidance to navigate their journey from Mexico to Canada and ultimately cross into the United States.

The vast expanse of the northern border, stretching over 5,525 miles from Maine to the western tip of New York state, presents a significant challenge for border patrol agents. With only 2,200 agents assigned to monitor this longest border in the world, it is clear that more resources and support are needed to effectively address the increasing migrant crossings.

The situation at the northern border emphasizes the urgency for comprehensive immigration reform and improved border security measures. It highlights the need for better coordination between law enforcement agencies and government entities to effectively address the influx of migrants and ensure their safety during their journey.
