Record funding boost for NSW bush restoration

Nature restoration charity Landcare will be able to continue critical work rehabilitating the bush after the NSW government green-lit a major funding boost.

The organisation is set to receive $59 million across the next four years, allowing it to expand and continue its work looking after the state's natural environment.

Established 34 years ago, the not-for-profit body handles bush management for nearly two-thirds of NSW.

The funds will allow the organisation to support 83 full-time coordinators, mostly in regional areas, to work with Landcare's 60,000 volunteers and 3000 local groups, including Bushcare, Rivercare and Dunecare.

The charity will deliver and support projects specific to the needs of local natural environmental and agricultural systems, the government said in a statement on Friday.

Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty said the funding would give more time for co-ordinators to focus on delivering projects on the ground.

"For the first time, support staff roles were also included and we know that was important to provide additional support with administrative tasks, allowing coordinators to focus on the delivery of on-ground projects," she said.

Volunteers have previously spoken of spending more than half their time applying for grants and having to account for the funding.

Delivering the funding was part of a pre-election commitment from Labor.

The $59 million in funding is projected to generate a return of $218 million, representing $3.70 for every dollar spent.

Landcare NSW reported funding of $3.5 million in 2023, the vast majority of which came from government grants.
