Rebels To Announce List Of Assad Regime Officials Wanted

opposition fighter rebels steps on a broken bust of the late Syrian President Hafez Assad in Damascus rebel

Syria's rebels have announced their intention to release a list of senior Assad regime officials wanted for torture. This move comes after decades of authoritarian rule by the Assad family, marked by widespread reports of human rights abuses including mass incarceration, torture, and extra-judicial killings.

The rebel coalition, led by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), stated that they will unveil 'List no. 1' containing the names of the most senior officials implicated in the torture of Syrian civilians. HTS leader, Ahmed Al Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, emphasized their commitment to holding accountable those responsible for atrocities against the Syrian people.

In a bold declaration, Sharaa asserted that HTS will actively pursue war criminals and seek their extradition from countries where they may have sought refuge. The rebels have announced rewards for information leading to the identification of senior army and security officers allegedly involved in war crimes.

Furthermore, Sharaa clarified that a general amnesty is in place for conscripted soldiers within the Syrian military, urging them to register with a designated 'settlement center.' However, this amnesty does not extend to officers and soldiers who volunteered to serve in the Assad regime's security forces.

The rebels' announcement signals a significant development in the ongoing conflict in Syria, as efforts to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations gain momentum.
