Recent reports from the United Nations indicate that nearly 3,000 people have lost their lives in the city of Goma, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The violence erupted as rebels, including the M23 armed group, captured Goma after intense clashes with the Congolese army.

The rebel coalition, known as Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), declared a ceasefire in response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the Kinshasa regime. However, the ceasefire has been met with skepticism as heavy fighting continues in South Kivu province.

DR Congo, a nation with a history of ethnic tensions and conflicts over resources, has been plagued by violence for decades. The rebel group M23, composed mainly of ethnic Tutsis, has been engaged in renewed rebellion against the government since 2022.

The eastern region of DR Congo, particularly North Kivu where Goma is situated, is rich in minerals like coltan, essential for electronic devices. The rebels' advances have raised concerns about the safety of civilians and the potential loss of critical infrastructure like Kavumu airport in Bukavu.

The rebel alliance's intentions to move beyond Goma towards Bukavu and even Kinshasa have escalated fears of further violence and displacement. The UN has expressed grave concerns about the deteriorating situation and the impact on civilians.

As the rebels consolidate control over Goma and surrounding areas, the Congolese government has acknowledged their presence but has not confirmed their complete takeover. The appointment of a new military governor for North Kivu indicates the region is under a state of siege.

The escalating violence has led to a significant humanitarian crisis, with thousands of civilians seeking refuge at UN peacekeeping bases in Goma. The situation remains volatile, with exit routes from the city under rebel control and the airport closed indefinitely.

The international community is closely monitoring the developments in DR Congo, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and the protection of civilian lives in the region.
