Rebel forces, including the M23 armed group, have reportedly taken control of Bukavu, the second largest city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The rebel coalition, known as the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), claimed to have captured the Kavumu airport in South Kivu, leading to the retreat of government forces.
Residents of Bukavu have witnessed looting and the presence of rebel fighters in the streets. The AFC spokesperson, Victor Tesongo, confirmed the rebel alliance's control over the city, while government authorities have not yet verified the takeover.
Reports from residents indicate that strategic points in Bukavu, such as the provincial governor's office and residence, have been occupied by the rebels. The rapid advance into Bukavu follows the recent capture of Goma, the largest city in the neighboring North Kivu province, by the same rebel forces.

The M23 armed group, which is part of the AFC alliance, has been accused of receiving support from Rwanda. However, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has denied knowledge of any involvement of his nation's troops in the DRC conflict.
Since 2022, the M23 rebels have been engaged in renewed hostilities against the DRC government, aiming to secure territory in the mineral-rich eastern region. The rebels have taken control of resource-rich areas like Nyabibwe and Rubaya, known for their coltan deposits.
Efforts to broker a ceasefire and end the conflict have so far been unsuccessful, as the rebels continue their quest for territorial expansion despite international calls for peace.
