Rebel Wilson reveals daily diet that helped her shed 5.5 stone on 'year of health'

Rebel Wilson has revealed the secret behind her remarkable weight loss transformation.

Since embarking on her self-titled “year of health” in 2020, the Australian comedian has lost more than five stone – and she has also managed to keep the weight off since reaching her goal of 11st 8lb.

The actress, 42, has shared that, alongside a gruelling exercise regime, her new healthy look partially down to following the Mayr Method diet plan.

The diet, developed by Austrian physician Dr. Franz Xaver Mayr, encourages good eating practices like chewing food thoroughly, eliminates snacking and reduce gluten and dairy intake, while focusing on high-alkaline foods such as vegetables and fish.

The Pitch Perfect actress starts each day with a big breakfast, with meals getting smaller in portion size throughout the day as part of the plan.

Breakfasts might include a vegetable omelette or an avocado cream with smoked salmon.

An ideal lunch would be two vegetables with some fish or carbohydrate (not both), at around 3pm.

The diet promotes a smaller portion of protein and veg for dinner or no dinner at all.

Her Mayr Method plan also encourages drinks of water or green tea.

The Australian kick-started her weight loss at a wellness centre in Austria where sugar, alcohol and caffeine are banned, dinner is frowned upon and guests chew every mouthful 40 times.

She turned to the Vivamayr Altaussee centre in Lake Altaussee, Austria – a picturesque haven loved by celebrities including Liz Hurley and The Rolling Stones.

Rebel has visited the centre twice, most recently November 2020.

The centre is known for its regimented diet plan, based on the Mayr cure – a food philosophy created in 1901.

Certain fundamentals apply to nearly every visitor. Guests are encouraged to chew every mouthful 40 times to help with the digestive process.

As part of the detoxification process there is no sugar, no caffeine, no booze and no raw food.

"It’s a calming therapy for your gut system so we’re aiming for easily digestible food," the centre’s Dr Schubert previously told us.

Rebel had been inspired to improve her health after looking into freezing her eggs and being told the healthier she was, the better her chances of the process going well.

Speaking on the Life Uncut podcast in January this year, Rebel said she been a "normal size" when she was younger, but in her twenties gained weight after she was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).

The Pitch Perfect star also revealed that her size was one of the factors behind pursuing a career in comedy.

She said most comedians "often have something physical about them that's abnormal" – hence why they take up comedy.

"Those people tend to go better in comedy," she said, "so I turned what was turned into a lot of agents as a disadvantage into my advantage."

Rebel has always been careful to explain her health was the reason she underwent the transformation, and said she had a wake-up call after going to see a medic about her fertility.

During the appointment, the doctor frankly informed the comic that if she wanted to improve her chances of becoming a mother that the best route would be to lose excess weight.

Reflecting on the chat that spurred her on to gradually lowering the amount of calories she was consuming alongside starting HIIT workouts, she said: "When I was going through and looking into fertility stuff, the doctor was like, 'Well, you'd have a much better chance if you were healthier'.

During the honest Instagram live, Rebel continued: "I was actually a bit offended. I thought that even though I was bigger, I was pretty healthy. So that's what started it - that if I lost some excess weight, it would give me a better chance of freezing eggs and having better quality eggs."

"At first it wasn't even for myself, it was thinking of a future mini-me and their quality."

She spoke about her five-stone weight loss and admitted to looking different.

Addressing her "transformation", she quipped: "I hope JK Rowling still approves."

The best-selling author, 56, has been criticised for her controversial comments about the trans community.
